CLIENT
Royal Caribbean Cruises
In the creation of Royal Caribbean's new ship, "Icon of the Seas," 3deluxe was deeply involved in the initial ideation and conceptualization of the innovative platform for the Icon class.
»Icon of the Seas is like a floating city on the ocean – with a design and planning period of about 6 years one of the most complex and fascinating projects 3deluxe has ever been involved in.«
ANDREY BEDOV, NAVAL ARCHITECT AT 3DELUXE
»The design process of a cruise ship is enormously multifaceted. It requires precise planning and coordination among numerous experts, including shipyards, manufacturers, engineers, scientists and marketing specialists – the best minds not only in the maritime world. Cooperation & coordination is key!«
BJÖRN ASMUSSEN, OCEAN DIRECTOR AT 3DELUXE
In 2015, 3deluxe was approached by Royal Caribbean Cruises as a newcomer with no previous experience in ship design. At that time, the cruise industry was in a modernization phase and sought the disruptive spirit of innovative land-based architecture studios to support this evolution.
After the successful Cocoon Club story - it all started with an interior project, the nightclub for Mein Schiff 6 - within a year we had evolved to exterior design and ultimately the development of entirely new white paper concepts and innovative first-at-sea features ranging from high-end luxury expedition vessels to the world's largest and boldest passenger ship at sea.
Up to now has been responsible for developing the exterior design of numerous cruise ship newbuilds and luxury expedition vessels alongside various interior and open deck venues for various companies such as Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises in Miami, TUI Cruises in Hamburg or Silversea in Monaco.
The department 3DELUXE OCEAN has firmly established itself in the industry, has a solid client base, and is now expanding its expertise to include cutting-edge, sustainable concepts for the private superyacht market.
Similar to the construction industry on land, the issue of CO2 emissions in shipping is a key issue that all stakeholders have to face. The cruise industry is currently undergoing rapid transformation to achieve the set targets of CO2-free shipping by 2045.
There are very many parallels here with the challenges facing the construction industry on land. However, the cruise industry is much smaller and therefore seems to be more flexible and faster. For 3deluxe architects, this is a perfect learning environment how to drive sustainability in a very pragmatic and smart way in very complex maritime construction projects. We love to get involved where things are seriously evolving for the better with a lot of innovation and positive spirit.
